How long does it take to charge an electric car in the UK?
Charging time depends on three things: the size of your car's battery, the speed of your charger, and how much charge you're adding. A 7 kW home wallbox charging a typical 60 kWh EV from 20% to 80% takes around 5–6 hours — perfect for overnight charging. A 50 kW rapid charger does the same job in under an hour.

Why charge to 80% rather than 100%?
Most EV manufacturers and battery experts recommend keeping daily charging between 20% and 80%. Above 80%, lithium-ion batteries charge more slowly (a process called tapering) and repeated full charges accelerate long-term battery degradation. Charging to 100% is fine occasionally — for a long motorway trip, for example — but for everyday home charging, 80% is the sweet spot.
Does cold weather affect charging time?
Yes — significantly. In temperatures below 5°C, EV batteries charge more slowly and hold less charge. You might find your 7 kW charger effectively delivers closer to 5–6 kW on a cold winter night. Our calculator shows warm-weather estimates; add 20–30% to the result in winter conditions.
What is charger efficiency?
Not all the electricity drawn from the wall ends up in your battery. AC home chargers typically convert around 85–95% of the electricity they draw. The rest is lost as heat in the onboard charger. DC rapid chargers bypass this conversion and are close to 100% efficient. Our calculator defaults to 90% for home AC charging, which reflects real-world averages.

How long does it take to charge a Tesla Model 3 at home?
A Tesla Model 3 Standard Range (57.5 kWh) charged from 20% to 80% on a 7 kW home charger takes approximately 4 hours 57 minutes. The Long Range (75 kWh) takes around 6 hours 26 minutes for the same charge. Tesla recommends charging to 80% for daily use.
How long does it take to charge a VW ID.4 at home?
A VW ID.4 (77 kWh) charged from 20% to 80% on a 7 kW home wallbox takes approximately 6 hours 36 minutes. On an 11 kW wallbox (if your property has three-phase power) this drops to around 4 hours 13 minutes.
Can I charge my EV overnight on a 3-pin plug?
Yes, but it's slow. A 3-pin plug delivers just 2.3 kW, so charging a 60 kWh EV from flat to 80% takes around 21 hours. It's fine for a small top-up but not practical for daily full charges. A 7 kW home wallbox is 3× faster and is eligible for the OZEV government grant.
How long does a rapid charger take?
A 50 kW DC rapid charger can add around 100 miles of range in approximately 35–45 minutes for most EVs. A 150 kW ultra-rapid charger can do the same in 10–15 minutes on compatible vehicles. Note that charging slows above 80% on all DC chargers to protect the battery.
Does my EV's maximum charge rate affect the result?
Yes — every EV has a maximum AC and DC charge rate. A car with a 7.4 kW onboard charger won't charge faster than 7.4 kW even if connected to an 11 kW wallbox. Our calculator uses the charger speed you select; if your car's maximum is lower, use that figure for the most accurate result. Check your car's manual for its maximum AC charge rate.
How much does it cost to charge at home?
At the current standard rate of around 24p/kWh, charging a 60 kWh EV from 20% to 80% costs approximately £8.64. Drivers on an EV-specific smart tariff can charge overnight at significantly lower rates — some tariffs offer off-peak rates from around 7p/kWh, which would bring the same charge down to around £2.52.
