EV charging costs UK
Understand what it costs to charge an electric car at home, on an EV tariff and at public chargers — and how to work out the real cost per mile.
How much does it cost to charge an electric car?
There is no single UK EV charging price. The amount you pay depends mainly on where you charge, the electricity unit rate, how much energy the vehicle needs and how efficiently that electricity reaches the battery.
Charging at home is calculated using your household electricity tariff. Public charging is priced by the charging network and may use a different pence-per-kWh rate, membership price or other charging structure.
Electricity used in kWh × electricity price per kWh
For a more realistic home-charging estimate, allow for charging losses because the electricity drawn from your home supply can be greater than the energy ultimately stored in the battery.
The main types of EV charging cost
Home EV charging costs
For many drivers with off-street parking, home charging is the easiest way to control charging costs because the electricity price is known in advance and the car can often be charged overnight.
The amount of electricity required depends on the usable battery capacity and the percentage of the battery being replenished.
Use the Home EV Charging Cost Calculator to enter your own battery size, electricity price, charging efficiency and weekly charging routine.
Do charging losses matter?
Yes. Not every kWh drawn from the electricity supply ends up stored in the battery. Energy can be used by charging electronics, battery conditioning and other systems or lost as heat.
That is why our calculators distinguish between energy added to the battery and electricity drawn from the supply.
Smart EV tariff costs
EV tariffs can make overnight charging much cheaper, but comparing only the advertised off-peak rate can be misleading.
A tariff with a very low overnight rate may also have a higher daytime electricity price or a different daily standing charge. Those changes affect the rest of the home’s electricity bill.
Our Smart EV Tariff Savings Calculator compares EV charging, other household electricity, peak and off-peak use and standing charges.
Public EV charging costs
Public chargers are operated by commercial charging networks and the price can vary by network, charger type, location and payment method.
A slower destination charger may have a different price from a rapid motorway charger, and some networks offer different rates to members or subscribers.
How to calculate EV charging cost per mile
Cost per mile is often more useful than cost per full charge because EV battery sizes vary.
1 ÷ EV efficiency in miles/kWh
Grid electricity per mile:
Battery energy per mile ÷ charging efficiency
Charging cost per mile:
Grid electricity per mile × electricity unit rate

What affects your EV charging bill?
Is home charging always cheaper than public charging?
Not necessarily in every individual case, but they are priced in different ways. Home charging uses the household tariff, whereas a public network must also recover the cost of installing, operating and maintaining its charging infrastructure.
The useful approach is to use the actual tariff or network price available to you rather than relying on a generic national estimate.

EV charging cost FAQs
How do I calculate the cost of charging an EV at home?
Estimate how much electricity the charging session draws from your supply and multiply that figure by your electricity unit rate. Allowing for charging losses gives a more realistic estimate.
Is EV charging priced per kWh?
Domestic electricity is normally billed using a unit rate per kWh plus a standing charge. Many public charging networks also quote a pence-per-kWh price, although their exact pricing structures vary.
What is the cheapest time to charge an electric car?
That depends on your electricity tariff. Time-of-use and EV tariffs can offer cheaper electricity during specified off-peak periods. Check the actual hours and prices on your tariff.
Does a larger EV battery cost more to charge?
For the same percentage increase and electricity price, a larger usable battery generally requires more energy. In everyday use, however, annual cost also depends on mileage and vehicle efficiency.
Is public rapid charging more expensive than charging at home?
Public rapid charging has its own commercial price and should be compared with your actual home tariff rather than a generic assumption. Check the network’s current rate before charging.
Do EV charging costs include the electricity standing charge?
A charging-session calculation usually excludes the standing charge because the household normally pays it whether or not the EV is charged. When comparing whole electricity tariffs, however, standing charges matter and should be included.
How can I compare EV tariffs properly?
Compare the off-peak rate, peak rate, standing charge, charging window and the proportion of both EV and household electricity you expect to use off-peak. Our Smart EV Tariff Savings Calculator does this as a whole-tariff comparison.
