Check your likely grant route
This gives an indicative result only. OZEV makes the formal eligibility decision.
1. Do you own or use an OZEV-approved electric vehicle, lease one for at least 6 months, use one as a qualifying work vehicle, or currently have one on order?
2. Which best describes the home where the chargepoint would be installed?
3. What parking do you have at this home?
4. Has the chargepoint already been installed?
The chargepoint must not be installed before OZEV confirms that you are eligible.
5. Have you already claimed a residential OZEV chargepoint grant or an earlier EVHS or Domestic Recharge Scheme grant?
6. Is this an existing residential property in the UK that you live in, and are you not currently moving or planning to move?
The resident grants do not cover an unoccupied property, a property still being built, or a home you are moving away from.
7. Do you have the permissions needed for the installation?
This can include landlord, freeholder, managing-agent, highways, planning or other third-party permission.
8. Will you install an approved permanent cross-pavement charging solution, such as a charging gully or cable channel?
Temporary cable covers or mats do not meet this requirement.
9. Is there lawful on-street parking generally available outside or near your home that could be served safely by the cross-pavement solution?

UK EV chargepoint grants in 2026

From 1 April 2026, the maximum grant available under the main residential OZEV chargepoint schemes increased to £500 per eligible socket. The resident schemes can cover 75% of eligible chargepoint purchase and installation costs, subject to the £500 maximum.

Funding is currently available until 31 March 2027. This checker focuses on the renters or flat owners grant and the households with on-street parking grant.

Important: if you own and live in an ordinary house with a driveway or garage, you do not qualify for the renters or flat owners grant simply because you have off-street parking.

Resident grants at a glance

Grant Who it is for Maximum Parking requirement
Renters or flat owners People who own and live in a flat, or rent and live in a residential property 75% up to £500 Private off-street parking that you own or have the legal right to use
Households with on-street parking People who own or rent the home where they live 75% up to £500 No private and exclusive off-street parking, plus an eligible permanent cross-pavement solution

Renters or flat owners grant

You may qualify if you own and live in a flat, including an eligible shared-ownership flat, or rent and live in a residential property. You must have private off-street parking and own or use an eligible vehicle.

The parking space must be private, clearly defined and accessible to you. You must own it or have the legal right to use it and hold any permissions needed for the installation.

Households with on-street parking grant

This route is for people who own or rent the home where they live but do not have private and exclusive access to off-street parking.

You must also install an eligible permanent cross-pavement charging solution and obtain consent from the relevant highways authority. Temporary cable covers or mats are not eligible.

The grant does not give you ownership of, exclusive use of, or a reserved right to the parking space outside your home.

How to apply

  1. Check that your vehicle is on the current OZEV eligible-vehicle list.
  2. Contact an OZEV-authorised installer and obtain a quote.
  3. Choose an eligible chargepoint model and obtain all relevant property, parking and highways permissions.
  4. Complete the customer application yourself using the official application service.
  5. Wait until OZEV confirms that you are eligible before installation begins.
  6. The authorised installer completes the installation.
  7. The installer submits the grant claim. If the claim is successful, OZEV pays the grant to the installer.

How much could the grant cover?

If eligible chargepoint purchase and installation costs were £600, 75% would be £450, so the maximum grant in that example would be £450.

If eligible costs were £800, 75% would be £600, but the grant is capped at £500.

What changed on 1 April 2026?

The maximum resident grant increased from £350 to £500 per eligible socket and the schemes were extended until 31 March 2027.

The flats and renters grant also moved to a customer-application platform. Customers complete their own grant application, while authorised installers submit the grant claim after installation.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the OZEV home chargepoint grant in 2026?

Eligible resident applications can receive 75% of eligible chargepoint purchase and installation costs, up to £500 for one socket.

Can flat owners get the grant?

Potentially. You must own and live in the flat, have qualifying private off-street parking, use an eligible vehicle and meet the other scheme conditions.

Can a homeowner with a driveway get the renters or flat owners grant?

No. An owner-occupier of an ordinary house is excluded from that grant. A house converted into flats can be treated differently if you own and live in one of the flats.

Can renters apply?

Potentially. You must live in the rented property, have qualifying parking, use an eligible vehicle and obtain the permissions required for the installation.

Can I get the grant with only on-street parking?

Potentially. You need suitable on-street parking, an eligible permanent cross-pavement charging solution, highways-authority consent and the other required permissions.

Does a temporary cable mat qualify?

No. The current on-street grant requires a permanent cross-pavement solution.

Who applies for the grant?

The customer completes the grant application. The chargepoint must not be installed until OZEV confirms eligibility. After installation, the authorised installer submits the grant claim.

Can I install first and claim afterwards?

No. Installing before applying or before OZEV confirms eligibility invalidates the subsequent grant offer.

Do I need an OZEV-authorised installer?

Yes. The grant installation must use an OZEV-authorised installer and an eligible chargepoint model.

How long are the current grants available?

Funding is currently available until 31 March 2027, although the government reserves the right to change or end the schemes.

What if I am a landlord?

There is a separate residential landlord chargepoint grant. Use that scheme if you are applying as an eligible landlord rather than as the resident.

Both schemes cover 75% of the combined cost of buying and installing an approved EV charger, up to a maximum of £500. The grant is applied by your installer — you do not apply to OZEV directly.

How much does a home EV charger cost after the grant?

A typical 7 kW smart home wallbox costs between £800 and £1,200 fully installed before the grant. After the £500 OZEV grant (75% of cost, up to £500), most homeowners pay between £300 and £700 for a quality smart charger installed by an approved company. The grant significantly reduces the upfront cost and most installations pay for themselves within 12–18 months through reduced public charging costs.

What changed on 1 April 2026?

The main changes from 1 April 2026 were: the grant amount increased from £350 to £500; flat owners were added to the eligible group under Scheme 1; a new Scheme 2 was introduced for households with on-street parking only; and all schemes were extended until 31 March 2027. The workplace and landlord grants also increased to £500 per socket.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the OZEV home charger grant in 2026?

From 1 April 2026, both residential OZEV chargepoint grant schemes offer up to £500, covering 75% of the combined cost of buying and installing an approved EV charger. This increased from £350 under the previous scheme. The grants are available until 31 March 2027.

Can flat owners get the EV charger grant?

Yes — from April 2026, flat owners who live in their flat can apply for the Scheme 1 grant (up to £500), provided they have dedicated off-street parking and permission from their freeholder or building management company. This is a significant change from the previous scheme, which largely excluded flat owners.

Can I get the grant if I only have on-street parking?

Yes — there is now a dedicated Scheme 2 grant for households without off-street parking. It covers up to £500 towards a cross-pavement charging solution such as a charging gully installed in the pavement outside your property. This requires local council approval and an OZEV-approved installer experienced in on-street solutions.

Can renters get the OZEV grant?

Yes — private renters in any residential property type (houses, flats, apartments) can apply for the Scheme 1 grant, provided they have dedicated off-street parking and written permission from their landlord. Social housing and council tenants are not eligible for the standard residential grants.

Do I need to apply for the grant myself?

No — your OZEV-approved installer handles the grant application on your behalf. The £500 is deducted from your invoice automatically. You simply choose an approved installer and approved charger, and pay the reduced amount. You do not need to contact OZEV directly.

How long is the grant available for?

The updated grant schemes run until 31 March 2027. OZEV has stated this is a final year extension — it is not guaranteed that the grants will be renewed beyond this date. If you are considering installing a home charger, applying before March 2027 ensures you can access the current funding.

Which EV chargers qualify for the OZEV grant?

Only chargers on the OZEV approved product list qualify. Most major UK home charger brands are approved, including Pod Point, Ohme, Hypervolt, Zappi (myenergi), and Wallbox. Your installer will confirm which models qualify — always use an OZEV-approved installer to ensure the grant is applied correctly.
